After dropping out of high school and spending time working as a laborer and carpenter, Richie Wilkerson began installing tile both in new homes and in homes undergoing renovations. He started Wilkerson Tile Company in 2006. Things started well for Wilkerson Tile, but when the economic downturn happened in 2009, the business almost ended.
However, Richie, who describes himself as “fairly stubborn,” dedicated himself to making the business work. He went months without a paycheck and did most of the work alone. Though he went into debt, he worked out a repayment plan with his suppliers and paid them all back within three years.
Since that difficult period, Richie has opened a retail store, and Wilkerson Tile Company has grown into the largest residential tile installation business in Chattanooga. He has a dedicated team and hires out contractors as necessary to handle jobs. Now, when people in and around Chattanooga need to select tile and have it installed, they choose Wilkerson Tile Company.
